The two most important forms of vitamin D are vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Vitamin D3 level corresponds with endogenous production as well as exogenous diet and supplements. Most of the 25 hydroxyvitamin D, measurable in blood circulation, is 25 hydroxyvitamin D3 whereas 25 hydroxyvitamin D2 reaches measurable levels only in patients taking vitamin D2 supplements. This test is the preferred test for assessing vitamin D status and most accurately reflects the body's vitamin D stores. Decreased Levels are due to: Inadequate exposure to sunlight, Dietary deficiency, Vitamin D malabsorption, Severe Hepatocellular disease, Muscle weakness, Drugs like Anticonvulsants, Nephrotic syndrome, Bone malformation-rickets in children in case of severe deficiency. Increased levels lead to: Vitamin D intoxication
